How to grow grapes

Learning how to grow grapes is not as difficult as it sounds. All you really need is a little skill and some patience. Well, patience is something you need no matter what you grow.
The next thing you need is a simple set of instructions to follow and there are many books, e-books, audio books, etc. available.

Grapes come in different sizes and colors but they are all juicy and delicious. Once you know how to grow grapes you will be able to make anything from homemade wine to jam or salads - all from the fruits of your own labour. There is nothing more rewarding than watching a beautiful creation of your own to grow and enjoying the end result.

The attributes of the grapes (color, size, taste) is determined by the species of grapes, but there is something more important to this. The different grape species have different climatic requirements, so you will have to choose which species suites the climate where you live the best. If you try to grow the wrong grapes for your area you will get a bad result if indeed any result at all. As you learn more about how to grow grapes you may be able to experiment more on selecting species and maybe even mixing them.

Grapes can grow in many places and different soils, but the most important thing  is to make sure the grape plants get as much sun as possible. You will have to select the optimal spot for your grapes. The more sun the plants get the sweeter the grapes will be. And of cause the plants need water so be sure to supplement them during dry periods.

I did say the grapes could grow in different types of soil, but the more fertile the soil is the better. This is where fertilizer comes in. You can optimize the growth using fertilizer and the poorer the soil the greater the need for a good fertilizer. Good old fashioned manure works great but it may not be readily available to you and your neighbours may not be too happy about the smell either. Store bought fertilizer works equally well but you wont be able to call your grapes organic. No matter what you choose your grapes will benefit greatly from a fertilizer.

Now you have already learned a tiny bit about how to grow grapes, but here is a final advice for you. It is about pruning and this is very important. As the grape plants become bigger and bigger the roots have to extract and supply more and more nourishment to every cluster of grapes and there is a limit to how much the roots can work. In other words, if you don't prune the plants you will end up with small grapes. This would be a dissatisfactory result after all the hard work you had put into growing your own grapes.
